Language focus: "Go away!" Halloween characters (monster, witch, black cat, ghost.)
Classroom benefits: Go Away is an active song that children learn very quickly. This song can be used anytime, but of course, it goes well with a Halloween theme. Most Halloween songs are very difficult to understand for young children, as is Halloween! This song is super simple, and gives young children a simple phrase they can use that might just keep those tears away on their first Halloween!
Lyrics and actions:
(Before singing the song, teach the gestures for each of the creatures: Big green monster: Hold your hands up high as if they were two big claws. Scary witch: Make the shape of a witch's hat over your head with your hands. Black cat: Swipe your hand as if it were a cat's claw. White ghost: Hold your hands in front of you as though you are floating like a ghost. )
Go away, big green monster, go away. (Push your hands out, then make the monster gesture, then push your hands out again.)

Activity ideas:
Set up flashcards (provided below) for monster, witch, cat, and ghost. Give the children soft fluffy balls or something they can throw at the cards and, on each “go away” they can throw one at the appropriate card. At the end of that verse, take that card away. and go on to the next verse.
At home, it's a great song to sing your child to back to sleep after midnight spottings of monsters in the closet or under the bed!
