12. The Shape Song #1 |
|
||||||||||||
....................................................................................................................................................... This is a super simple song for practicing shape recognition. ....................................................................................................................................................... Before singing the song, introduce or review some shapes. The Shape Song #1 practices circle, diamond, square, and heart. (The Shape Song #2 practices triangle, rectangle, oval, and star). Try playing the song in the in the background as you review. Also, try the silly shape character flashcards below. When you are ready to sing, make a circle and hold hands! ....................................................................................................................................................... A circle. A circle. Can you make a circle? (Make a circle with your hands) A circle. A circle. Can you find a circle? (Make a circle with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.) I know...let's make a diamond. Can you make a diamond? Here we go... A diamond. A diamond. Can you find a diamond? (Make a diamond with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.) Hmm...what's next? How about a square? A square. A square. Can you find a square? (Make a square with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.) Alright. It's time for one more. Let's try a heart. A heart. A heart. Can you find a heart? (Make a heart with your hands, and then place your hand above your eyes as if you are searching for something.) A circle, a diamond, a square, and a heart. (Make the shapes with your hands or point to the shpaes around the room.) ....................................................................................................................................................... For smaller classes, cut out 10 mini copies of each shape from colored paper. Place them all in the centre of the room. Have the students sit around in a big circle. When them song says, "ready....GO!" everyone moves to the centre of the room searching for the shape. At this point you can pause the music and have everyone count their shapes, talk about the colors they found, etc. Alternatively, you could continue on with the song, and count up all the shapes and colors at the end. For a larger class, to avoid accidents, tape the shapes on the walls around the room and have the students run and touch the shapes. You could also ask them to count the shapes as they touch them, then come back and tell you how many they found. For older students, have them search for shapes around the room in everyday classroom objects. ....................................................................................................................................................... Here's a video of Justin-sensei of Tiny Tots Japan using the Shape Song with his young students in Tokyo:
