3. How's the Weather?

Language focus: "How's the weather?" "Let's look outside." "Is it sunny/rainy/cloudy/snowy?"

Classroom benefits
:
How's The Weather? is a soothing song for talking about the weather. We keep it simple with four terms for describing the weather: sunny, rainy, cloudy, and snowy. These are the easiest weather concepts for toddlers to understand, and they are easy to gesture too! This song is a great lead-in to further discussion of weather and weather-related terms.

You’ll notice a pause after the questions, “Is it sunny/rainy/cloudy/snowy?” The pause is there so that children will have time to hear the lyric and do the gesture, and also to give children a chance to answer the question with a “yes” or “no”.

Lyrics and actions:

How’s the weather?
How’s the weather?
How’s the weather today? (Similar to the American Sign Language sign for “weather”, make a ‘W’ with your middle three fingers on each hand and twist them back and forth.)
Is it sunny? (Make a big circle over your head with your arms.)
Is it rainy? (Wiggle your fingers down in front of you, simulating rain.)
Is it cloudy? (Squeeze two imaginary pillows above your head.)
Is it snowy? (Move your hands down in front of you in a slow, wavy motion.)
How’s the weather today? (Make the twisting Ws with your fingers.)

Let’s look outside. (Put your hand above your eyes and look out the window.)
